Gwyneth Paltrow and Apple Martin Nail a Minimalist Mother-Daughter Beauty Moment

Look familiar? Apple Martin joined her mother Gwyneth Paltrow on the red carpet of the Marty Supreme premiere in New York last night, wearing the sleek black Calvin Klein Collection dress Paltrow originally wore to the New York premiere of her iconic movie Emma in 1996.

Back then, Paltrow embraced an almost grungy beauty look, pairing the pared back dress with smudged blue-gray eyeshadow and kohl eyeliner, finished off with a dark red lip. Her blonde hair was pulled up into a loose bun, dark roots showing at a zig-zag center part and tendrils of hair around her ears. It was very in keeping with the red carpet vibe at the time, but a touch more rebellious than the super refined Paltrow we have come to know.

Gwyneth and Apple walked the red carpet together—the premiere was a real family affair, as Paltrow’s co-star Timothée Chalamet also brought his mom in matchy-matchy Marty Supreme orange. Martin opted to embrace the more clean aesthetic of the same era, with a thin black flick of liquid eyeliner and a plump nude lip. Her hair was also up in a loose bun, with her long bangs tucked behind her ears. Paltrow, meanwhile, wore a similarly elegant and classic Valentino gown and her hair pulled into a low chignon, with face-framing pieces that created a long bob effect. She sported a brick red lip and black liner, a restrained but glamorous current signature look done by her go-to, Georgie Eisdell. (Who told Vogue previously that Paltrow is a fan of the suede red La Beauté Louis Vuitton lipstick, in the sumptuous shade Rouge Louis.) Both also opted to keep their manicures clean and bare—another ’90s trend that’s made its way back into the contemporary beautysphere. Such a clean, contemporary vibe kept things feeling fresh and chic, allowing the looks to shine. Ultimately, it was an evening of mother and daughter embracing the classic red carpet beauty codes, their own way.

Mother-daughter moments don’t have to mean matchy-matchy, but it’s sometimes inevitable that those strong genes are going to provide the basis for some striking beauty moments. Take Lily-Rose Depp and Vanessa Paradis for example, who both embrace their French women chicness with pouty lips and smoky eyes. Then there’s Kate and Lila Moss, both twinning tousled blondes who love defined eyes, skinny brows, and sculpted cheekbones. Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford, who have now walked plenty a red carpet together, embrace their dark features with red lips, lashings of mascara, and undulating brunette curls. Zoë Kravitz and mother Lisa Bonet are another example of interpolating beauty sensibilities with their own personal twists: while Kravitz leans more into a cool-girl, sleek style of glam, Bonet has long established a bohemian, gloriously natural aesthetic.
