If you’re a normal person planning a wedding, it makes sense to keep the guest list as tight as possible: after all, you presumably aren’t made of money, and considering that the average cost per wedding guest ranges from $150 to $350, I assume it’s hard to keep yourself from seeing your nearest and dearest with dollar amounts attached to them, like Jack Donaghy does on 30 Rock.
If you’re Taylor Swift, on the other hand, the calculus for wedding-guest invitations probably looks ever so slightly different. This woman’s worth (net worth, that is) just so happens to be an estimated $2.1 billion, and when you add in her new husband Travis Kelce’s near-hundred million or so, we can safely assume that penny-pinching for the wedding of the year was not the vibe.
Much has been made of the sheer volume of Swift and Kelce’s guest list, not to mention the elite and eclectic crowd represented (Lena Dunham! Adam Scott! Andrew Scott, for that matter! Zadie freaking Smith!), and I have to admit that I was surprised at first about all the Madison Square Garden hoopla of the nuptials. I guess I kind of expected Swift and Kelce to do something small and semi-private, but honestly, was that ever realistic for the most famous pair in the world? The happy couple’s invite-everyone approach actually makes a certain kind of sense; I mean, if you were rich enough to have pretty much everyone you loved or even liked at your wedding, wouldn’t you save yourself the effort of having to whittle down the list?
Swift has actually spoken about this more-is-more approach to her wedding guest list, saying on The Graham Norton Show last year: “I know it’s going to be fun to plan because I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have a small amount, and people are on the bubble and you have to evaluate or assess your relationship with them to see if they should be there. I’m not gonna do that.” If I ever become a billionaire pop star and then fall for an athlete whose wealth looks modest only in comparison (unlikely, granted), I’m taking a page out of Swift’s book when it comes to wedding planning. No decision fatigue or awkward conversations to be had; the more, the merrier, baby!
