When it comes to the New York Knicks, many fans have their superstitions. Padma Lakshmi has her Alaïa shoes, Jordyn Wood has her Woods by Jordyn bag. Last night, with a serious game on the line, singer and bride-to-be Taylor Swift attended the game at Madison Square Garden and threw her good-luck charm into the ring too: a braided hairdo.
The pop star sat courtside with sisters Este and Alana Haim, twinning in their customized bootleg Knicks tees, which had clever catchphrases like “Stevie Knicks” and “Knickleback” across the chest in team colors. For the night, the singer leaned upon one of her favorite beauty signatures—an immovable red lip, hair up in a fishtail braid, tied up with a team-colors blue and orange ribbon.

Yes, it felt very 2016-coded, but also intrinsically tied to the pop star’s personal victories. Swift has worn her hair in both a long intricate plait and a cute braided pony to some of her most significant events: For the 2024 Super Bowl, she swept her hair into a high ponytail, tendrils of braids through her longer lengths. Making her way to the field when the Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious over the San Francisco 49ers, Swift shared a kiss with Kelce: That image, committed to celebrity-PDA history, shows her braids in all their glory.
And to make her own history at the 2024 Grammys (where she became the first artist to win Album of the Year four times alongside a clutch of other awards for Midnights, and then announced her next album), Swift sported her hair sideswept and interwoven with teeny-tiny braids. Its intricacy matched her dramatic Schiaparelli gown, punky red lip, and layers upon layers of jewelry.
