“I possibly can never come back to New York after this experience, because I don’t think it’ll ever match it.” So says Luke Evans of making his whirlwind Broadway debut in The Rocky Horror Show this year—a job that’s earned him a Tony nomination (tune in this Sunday, June 7, to see how he fares!) and made him the temporary resident of a truly stunning aerie in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood.
To tag along with the Welsh actor for 24 hours is to witness the various routines that get him from point A to point B: brewing his morning coffee (the apartment’s espresso machine, he determines, is a baritone); walking his adorable little dachshund, Lala; picking up the fresh juice (carrots, beets, apple, celery, and “lots of ginger”) that’s been a staple of his diet for some 15 years—and that he credits almost entirely for his good health; scarfing down a hearty lunch that will more or less see him through the rest of the day (Evans doesn’t eat for two hours before showtime; he’s got a corset to fit into!); and then beginning the long process of getting into his wig, makeup, and first costume—including the pair of “monster boots” that make him stand a staggering 6’8″—before curtain. (When he describes his turn in Rocky Horror as “probably the most extraordinary transformation I’ve ever experienced as an actor in any role I’ve ever done,” one senses he means that both physically and spiritually.)
Happily, Evans has a merry group around him to help keep the Rocky Horror train on its tracks—from his life and business partner, Fran, who handles the day-to-day operations of their apparel and lifestyle brand, BDXY Studio, to his expert dresser, Emma Blodgette, and the scores of “rabid fans” who pack the house each night.
See what else goes on in Evans’s day before he makes Studio 54 shiver with antici…pation in the video above.
