Just as fun as their wonderfully wacky ensembles, meanwhile, has been seeing the custom couture that fans are putting together in the crowds. (Last night, for one, saw everything from lace masquerade masks to satin 18th-century-style corsets). “There was a showgirl look in Toronto that was absolutely stunning,” recalls Haute. (Yes, they can see you from the stage, and clock all of the looks.) “I also saw a full-blown total Liza drag a few nights ago, for our Cabaret-themed show.” The fans even get a moment of spotlight during their shows: During the performance of their song “Scantily Clad,” the duo brings fans on stage, choosing the ones with the very best designs.
With a busy summer tour and a fan base clearly willing to match their freak, it’s safe to say that the pop act’s star is swiftly rising in the music world. Only one album in, they already have fans hooked, and there may even be new music on the way soon. “When we finish this first leg of tour, I can’t wait to get into the studio,” teases Haute. “Right now, we’re in the green room writing lyrics and melodies, so that when we get back, we can turn on the mic and say, ‘Let’s go.’”
Even so, the pair are still getting used to life on the road—and in the spotlight. Up next, they soon enter music festival season this summer—they play Chicago’s Lollapalooza next month—and a European leg of the Big Disgrace tour in the fall. “I’ve been trying to find green things to eat, sleeping, and trusting in my Capricorn-ness to keep me grounded,” says Freddy (a great match to Haute’s Taurus). “Honestly, setting up our gear and tearing it down is oddly therapeutic for me.” Haute adds of their thriving day jobs, “The universe has given me my full-blown dream—being able to do so many things that I loved doing for fun.”
