9 Valentine’s Day Proposal Ideas for a Romantic Holiday Engagement

It’s no surprise that many people choose Valentine’s Day as the perfect time to propose. On a day dedicated to romance, asking your partner to marry you will make it one of the most memorable moments of both of your lives. While your approach doesn’t have to go too far beyond getting down on one knee and pulling out a ring, there are some fun ways to craft a romantic Valentine’s Day proposal that fits in with your celebrations: It’s possible to do an intimate proposal at home, or curate a V-Day date that leads you to the perfect proposal location.

While you should always think about what kind of proposal your partner would love most, take a peek ahead for Valentine’s Day proposal ideas to inspire you to ask that life-changing question.

Why Propose on Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days to propose all year for a good reason. Its namesake, Saint Valentine, actually received his canonization by performing weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry by the Roman emperor. While the holiday’s origins are not as widely known, its overall sentiment of focusing on romantic love rings true—it’s the perfect opportunity to turn your Valentine’s plans into a big proposal. Plus, you can celebrate the anniversary of your engagement on future Valentine’s Days to come.

Valentine’s Day Proposal Ideas

Breakfast in bed

One perfect way to start your Valentine’s Day is with an intimate proposal at home so you can celebrate the rest of the holiday together. Bring your partner breakfast in bed with an extra special surprise on the side: an engagement ring. Keep some Champagne chilled to toast to your engagement with mimosas.

Valentine’s Day card surprise

Writing a Valentine’s Day card is a sweet gesture that has its roots in the holiday’s history. Before Saint Valentine’s execution, he wrote a note to the jailkeeper’s daughter signed “Your Valentine.” Give your partner a sweet love note to read on Valentine’s Day, with a proposal at the end of your message. Be ready with your engagement ring to give to your S.O. once they finish reading.

Scenic stroll

Take a walk around your neighborhood or take a drive to a spot with a beautiful view. Once you can make it to a perfect lookout point or a favorite park bench, take a moment to reflect on your love and relationship before popping the question. If you want to capture this special moment, plan in advance with a photographer who can hide and get photos of the moment when you ask your person to marry you.

Ice skating rink proposal

If you live in a colder climate, February might not be the perfect time for an outdoor proposal. However, ice skating is one activity where you and your partner might bundle up for a fun outdoor date. As long as you are adept on the ice, consider getting down on one knee at the center of the rink. Coordinate with the facility management to put on your favorite romantic song or get them to clear the ice for your proposal.

Rose-covered room

If your significant other is coming to meet you for your Valentine’s Day date at home or a special location, prepare a big surprise by filling the room with flowers, music, and candlelight. When they arrive, pop the question in that perfectly romantic atmosphere.

Restaurant proposal

A Valentine’s Day date night at a favorite restaurant can be a great scene for your proposal if you think your partner would be comfortable with a public scene. You can keep it classic and get down on a knee next to the table, or work with the waitstaff to do a secret reveal of the ring box in a creative spot.

Vacation proposal

Head off on a romantic vacation for Valentine’s Day, whether it’s a nearby weekend trip or a destination you have always longed to visit together. Ahead of your trip, plan the perfect location to ask your partner to marry you. Don’t forget to arrange for a local photographer to capture the moment and plan celebrations to follow.

Cooking class proposal

A private cooking class is a popular Valentine’s date night idea—so why not step it up with a proposal? Get your instructor in on the plan and consider a sweet way to sneak in a proposal as you’re whipping up treats.

Dance floor proposal

Head to a jazz club, concert, or anywhere with a great dance floor where you can take a turn around the room with your special someone. Either keep your proposal intimate, or see if you can take the stage to ask them to marry you in a big, grand way.

Valentine’s Proposal Dos and Don’ts

The most important part of your proposal is to keep it true to both you and your partner. If they are a more reserved person, keep it intimate between the two of you. If you are sure they will say yes and could be open to a more public display, go ahead with an engagement out on the town. Just be sure to speak from the heart, have a ring ready to go, and arrange for someone to capture the moment.
