Bad Bunny may have been the star of the Latin Grammys last night—the superstar’s sixth album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, was nominated in nine categories and took home five awards, including album of the year—but for his long-awaited performance at the ceremony, the artist brought along Chuwi, the Puerto Rican band that features on “Weltita,” one of the sweetest songs on DTMF.
Made up of siblings Lorén Aldarondo, Wester Aldarondo, and Wilfredo “Willy” Aldarondo, along with Adrián López, the group fuses tropical jazz, salsa, indie rock, and whatever else is inspiring them at the moment to craft songs around classic themes of love, loss, and patria.
After steadily building a fanbase in Puerto Rico, the band has seen their profile suddenly skyrocket. In 2024 they were playing local shows and working day jobs; this year, they did La Residencia, Bad Bunny’s 31-day run of shows in San Juan; recorded an episode of NPR’s Tiny Desk; and flew all the way to Las Vegas for an unforgettable performance that mixed “Weltita” with their own track “Tikiri.”
“It’s a song we carry close to our hearts—one of our first songs, and also one of our most well-known. So we know people connect with it,” the band explained ahead of the show. “We would’ve never imagined that when we created it two or three years ago, we’d be performing it on this stage. It’s crazy.” The Chuwi members were also excited to catch performances from some of their favorite artists, including Ca7riel y Paco Amoroso, Grupo Frontera, and fellow Boricua Rauw Alejandro.
The foursome dressed up for the red carpet, with Lorén in a glamorous dress from Morphew and “the boys” in tuxes from Leonardo’s—an iconic Puerto Rican purveyor of suits since 1945—“to match the Old Hollywood vibe.” And though the Latin Grammys certainly represented one of their biggest stages yet, they relied on tried-and-true ways of getting rid of their jitters, from working out (Willy suggests “a minute-and-a-half plank and 20 push-ups”) to creative distractions (Adrián decorates their instrument with flowers “and I stress about that, but I get it done”).
Onstage, they reverted to their usual Caribbean cool style, which means bikini tops and experimental knitwear for Lorén and fun, casual separates for the rest of the band—all made by Puerto Rican designers.
