A pink-and-white plaid skirt suit seems like it would belong to a Republican senator, or perhaps a WASPy country club president—not Chloë Sevigny, longtime unrivaled queen of downtown New York cool. But, lo: Today, the actor managed to turn the conservative separates into a thing of cool, edgy beauty.
This morning, Sevigny stopped by The Today Show to promote her forthcoming film, The Five-Star Weekend, where her clothing served as perhaps a subtle nod to its Nantucket setting. The actor wore a pale pink and white Vivienne Westwood blazer replete with a nipped-in waist and shoulder pads, paired with a matching knee-length skirt.
Sevigny’s accessories were also quite prim: a pair of white pointy-toe heels, a white mini Self-Portrait purse embellished with a metallic gold bow, and oversized gold, rhinestone-encrusted earrings.
So how, exactly, is a knee-length pink-and-white plaid skirt suit edgy? Westwood was a master of subverting upper-class codes, and this skirt suit is no different. With the jacket’s gathered fabric and asymmetrical buttons and the skirt’s misaligned pattern, there is a sense of breezy haphazardness.
On anyone else, the look—despite its intentional edge—could still read dowdy. But on Chloë Sevigny, the potentially frumpy skirt suit is instantly rehabilitated.
