“It’s not for the ’gram, this is for life,” is one of Yara Flinn’s new taglines for her very New York brand, Nomia. As a born and raised New Yorker, her mission with her Williamsburg storefront and her line has always been to create practical yet stylish clothes that can get city dwellers through their everyday lives. She’s also very influenced by the world around her, which is why this season she was thinking about those who are partaking in strikes and protests when designing her collection. “I let my intuition guide me, there’s a lot of camouflage like colors and even the orange is a safety orange,” she said. “I thought a lot about being outside, and being on the streets whether it was through protesting or protecting our neighbors. Instead of being complacent and hopeless, the Nomia girl is defiant and battle ready.”
So how does that translate into the clothes? Well for starters, there are utilitarian nylon pullovers that come in a range of colors from that “safety orange” to a more fashionable metallic white. All her jackets include hoods and elastic drawcords to really protect you from the rain while the insides feature soft linings to protect skin from friction. A moto pant is another classic in Nomia’s lineup and here it comes with a dressier zipper on the fly so that it doesn’t read too casual when worn with a fancier top. Dresses don’t often play a big role in Flinn’s fall collections, but this season the blue satin number has an incredible sheen that not only photographed well in her lookbook, but also looked great in person. Thanks to the slightly thicker cut on the fabric, it’ll be more forgiving and hide any undergarment lines.
