Boho queen Dakota Johnson fronted the cover of Vogue Germany this month and shared all her beauty secrets. Yes, that includes all the details behind her famous mane.
“I’ve had bangs since I was a child,” Johnson told Vogue. “I cut them myself.” That was the birth of a signature look—and a fun habit—though obviously she didn’t know either at the age of four. “I’ve had the same haircut my entire life, apart from between the ages of about 10 and 14,” she adds. “I just feel like myself with bangs.”
So much so that she always has a pair of scissors on hand. “I would love to do without having to trim it all the time,” Johnson says. It’s a classic complaint of most people with bangs. But the actor has come up with a semi-pragmatic—and certainly adventurous—solution. “I always travel with scissors and love to drink a martini while trimming my own bangs.” When asked if this has ever gone wrong, she answers honestly: “Oh yes. Not every time, but yes.”
But it’s not just Johnson’s bangs that are her signature—it’s her healthy, shiny hair, too. “My hair and nails grow quickly. I think it just has to do with what you do on the inside. I eat very healthily, drink lots of water, and don’t do too much to my hair.” One thing she does love, though, is a hair serum to help with growth. “There are a few that I really like, for example, one from Crown Affair.”
Otherwise, she keeps her styling very simple: “I don’t use any styling products and let my hair air dry.” When she’s filming a movie or making a big appearance, it’s a different story, of course. “For red carpet events, I usually work with hair stylists Mark Townsend or George Northwood. They take really good care of my hair.”
