What Size Belt Should I Get? Belt Size Chart and Width

Start here

What’s This About

Start with your trouser waist size plus 2 inches, then check the maker’s own size chart, because brands measure belts to different holes.

This guide answers the questions men ask when they order a belt online, such as

• Is my belt size my pant size, or bigger?

• How do I measure a belt I already own, or my own waist?

• Why does a 34 from one brand fit differently from a 34 from another?

• Which hole should the buckle sit on when it fits?

• How wide should a belt be for a suit, and for jeans?

and many more!

If you own a belt that fits, measure it; that beats every conversion chart.

Key Points

01The common starting point is your trouser size plus 2 inches: Proper Cloth and Nimble Made both say so, and Tanner Goods says to order one size up, so a 34 trouser usually means a 36 belt.

02Belt numbers are not a shared standard: Proper Cloth measures from the buckle to the hole you use, Tanner Goods to the innermost hole and Fort Belvedere quotes the length to the middle hole, so read each maker’s chart.

03The surest method is to measure a belt that already fits you, from where the leather folds at the buckle to the hole you use, and compare that with the new maker’s chart.

04Width follows formality and the belt loops: roughly 1.1 to 1.38 inches for suits and dress trousers, about 1.5 inches for jeans and chinos.

The rule

Your belt size is a measurement, not your trouser label: measure the belt that fits, then match it to the maker’s chart.

The short answer: trouser size plus 2 inches

The rule of thumb most belt makers give is to add 2 inches to the waist size on your trousers.

Proper Cloth puts it simply: “add 2″ to your off-the-rack pant size”, so a 36-inch waist trouser points to a size 38 belt.

Nimble Made gives the same rule: “take your pants waist size and add two inches.”

Tanner Goods says, “we recommend ordering one size up from your pant’s waist size (i.e. if you wear a size 34 pant, order a Tanner Goods belt in size 36)”.

32 34
34 36
36 38

Treat the table as a starting point, not a guarantee; Fort Belvedere notes that “you cannot tell if they will actually fit you without trying them on, because the location of the belt holes and buckles varies based on manufacturer.”

Trousers that sit lower need a longer belt: Proper Cloth says that for “low rise trousers or jeans, consider adding 3 or 4 to your pant size.”

Why belt sizes differ between brands

The number on a belt is a length, but makers do not agree on which hole the length is measured to.

Proper Cloth measures “at the hole you use” to the end of the belt “where it meets the buckle”, and notes that “some will include the buckle in the belt length measurement.”

Tanner Goods measures “from the fold where the leather overlaps the buckle to the innermost hole”, so its size 34 is 34 inches to the first hole and 36 inches to the centre hole.

Fort Belvedere sells belts in short, medium and long and gives “the length to the middle hole”, about 105 cm (41 inches) for a medium.

Thickness changes the fit as well; Tanner Goods says its belts “fit smaller than most as our leather is quite thick and requires extra length to wrap around the waist.”

So two belts both labelled 34 can sit two holes apart on the same waist, which is why the maker’s own chart matters more than the label.

How to measure for a belt

Measure a belt you already own

Proper Cloth calls this “the best way to determine your belt size.”

Choose a belt that fits comfortably on the trousers you will wear the new one with.

Lay it flat and measure from the fold where the leather meets the buckle to the hole you use.

Round to the nearest inch; Proper Cloth says, “If you measure 36 inches, you will want to purchase a size 36 belt.”

Then compare that number with the new maker’s chart and check which hole that maker measures to.

Measure your waist where you wear your trousers

If you have no belt to measure, measure your body.

Thread a soft tape through the belt loops of trousers you wear, or measure around your body at the height where those trousers sit.

Tanner Goods says to “Measure your waist where you wear your pants to get an exact measure”, which may be at the hips or higher depending on the trousers and on you.

Stand relaxed; Proper Cloth says “do not push out your belly or suck it in”, with the tape snug, then round to the nearest inch.

This is a measurement for the belt, not a verdict on the trousers: a belt holds up trousers that already fit at the waist, and it cannot fix a waistband that is too large.

For trousers that need taking in or letting out, a tailor is the better answer than a tighter belt.

How a belt should fit

Many belts have five holes about an inch apart; Tanner Goods says its belts have “five holes total, one inch apart”, and Fort Belvedere’s have “five diamond-shaped holes” about 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart.

Several makers size around the middle hole: Fort Belvedere’s chart gives the waist each belt fits “Using Center Hole”, which leaves two holes either side to loosen or tighten.

If you need the last hole (the one furthest from the buckle), the belt is too short; Fort Belvedere says a belt pinned through its last hole “can appear distended or stubby.”

If you are on the first hole (the one nearest the buckle), the tail will be long and the belt may soon run out of adjustment.

Leather gives over time, and Proper Cloth notes that “a belt that fits snug initially will likely wear more comfortably down the road.”

What width of belt to wear

Width is the other half of fit, because the belt has to pass through the loops and suit the trousers.

Fort Belvedere describes formal dress belts as “slim, smooth leather, simple buckle” and casual belts as “wider, more rugged leather, fabric, or braided, with larger buckles.”

Suits and dress trousers

About 1.1 to 1.38 inches

A slim belt suits dress trouser loops and sits flat under a jacket; Fort Belvedere gives its dress belts as about 29 mm (1.14 inches) wide, and the belt maker Beltley calls 1.25 inches “the dress standard that fits suit loops.”

Jeans and chinos

About 1.5 inches

Jeans and casual trousers have wider loops, and Beltley says a 1.5-inch belt “fills casual loops properly.”

In between

About 1.38 inches

Beltley calls 1.38 inches “the crossover compromise that works”, for men who want one belt for suits and for chinos or wool trousers worn without a jacket.

Whatever the width, check that it threads through your loops before you buy; Beltley’s advice is to “Match belt width to your pant’s belt loops”.

With a suit or other formal outfit, match the belt leather to the shoes; Fort Belvedere’s rule is “black belt with black shoes, dark brown belt with dark brown shoes”.

For the shoes themselves, see our dress shoes guide.

Common questions

Q. Is belt size the same as pant size?

No.

Most makers suggest a belt about 2 inches (one size) larger than the trouser waist size, measured to the hole the maker uses.

Q. What size belt for a 34 waist?

Start with a 36, then check the maker’s chart; if the brand measures to the innermost hole, as Tanner Goods does, its own recommendation is still one size up.

Q. What if I am between sizes?

Tanner Goods says to “order the next standard belt size up”.

Mandy Meyer’s focus at The VOU is men’s body-shape styling, garment fit and outfit proportions. Her coverage addresses the practical questions behind a wardrobe choice: how a jacket sits across the shoulders, how trousers fall and how different cuts change the silhouette a wearer wants to create.

Her subject areas include the triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, oval, trapezoid, hourglass and diamond labels used in body-shape styling. These provide starting references for comparing visible proportions; they do not capture every body or prescribe one correct way to dress. The focus connects those observations with garment shape, construction, length and the relationship between the upper and lower parts of an outfit.

Mandy’s editorial coverage combines visual comparisons with fit checks for comfort and movement. Readers can consider whether a cut gives them the room they need, where clothing pulls or gathers and which changes might support their preferred look. The aim is to make menswear choices more understandable while keeping personal preferences and the wearer’s own styling goals central.
