It can tie a room together and add instant warmth to a white-box rental: The right rug will be one of the hardest-working decor items you own. But where to find the perfect one? Between custom made-to-order styles that can run pretty pricey to online retailers with a seemingly never-ending catalogue of similar (but somehow different!) sisal designs, shopping for a carpet online can be daunting. So, we recruited some professional help and got interior designers to weigh in on their go-to rug brands.

Vogue’s Guide to the Best Designer-Approved Rugs

Several of their tried-and-true spots offer customizable sizing, which is helpful if you’re working with a uniquely shaped room, and the list includes a great source for vintage finds if you prefer your decor to be of the one-of-a-kind variety. We also asked them to share their favorite rug of the moment: From versatile basics in jute and wool to more formal picks in soft silk (including a vibrant citron option maximalists in particular will immediately want to bookmark), you’re guaranteed to find something you love within their selects.

Here’s where to buy rugs, according to interior designers (plus a few designer-inspired picks to shop, to kickstart your own home refresh).

“Revival is a fantastic resource that is very budget-friendly. They have an almost dizzying array of options to suit a wide range of tastes. I particularly love that they have extra-large rugs because rugs that are too small in a room are my pet peeve—a rug should take up as much floor space as possible. They make a rug called Hart, which is a jute flatweave. It comes in a range of colors, and I love that it’s very thin; it’s great as a base layer in a room. I used them in the guest bedrooms in my own home. They look very expensive. Revival also has custom capabilities, which is marvelous because more often than not, a standard size does not fit the room you want it for.”

“Lulu and Georgia is a go-to if I am looking for a catalogue-size rug. I frequently use their Uma rug in the taupe and natural colors—easy and elevated.”

“I love Eny Lee Parker’s rugs because they add whimsy and interest without taking over a room. The patterns and colors have this softness and playfulness to them that just works so effortlessly. I used the Petal rug in a Brooklyn project, and it’s a lovely example of how a rug can quietly anchor a space. Made from a silk–bamboo blend and inspired by soft floral forms, it has a subtle sheen with an almost meditative quality that adds depth and warmth. And the citron colorway is so fun.”

“I love the versatility of Armadillo and Co as I’ve specified them many, many times for an array of different home styles. The quality is unmatched, and the rugs are all natural fiber, which I tend to be drawn towards. My current favorite is the Meadow rug; they have a stunning color palette that is rich with a varieties of hues to choose from. Armadillo also has customizable size options, making them an ideal candidate for awkwardly sized rooms.”

“I love working with Nordic Knots for more approachable price points. They offer a great collection of styles and colors that work in any space, and their team is very collaborative: They can customize nearly anything in their line. I especially love their Grand collection, which features deeply saturated hues in a wonderfully cozy wool. It’s durable and has a comfortable pile height, making it a great option for higher-traffic rooms.”

“We find that vintage is increasingly favored in design at this moment—there’s an enduring nature to vintage items that stand the test of time in a trend cycle world. We love to layer them in more intimate spaces, like a bedroom to add depth, dimension, and color. Chairish is a great resource, as you can find many vendors in one place with a wide range of options, styles, and price points. It’s one of our favorite sources for vintage finds.”

“Mark Krebs has a fantastic price point for the coziest, 100% New Zealand wool rugs, with a lovely color selection and custom sizes available. It’s all handmade in India. I love the Fawn area rug, but the Rose runner is an absolute favorite!”

“The Rug Company is one of our longtime go-tos for both bold patterns and simple solids. We use their Farrow & Ball Silk Border collection all of the time in a variety of applications. They’re wool-based, so they are very family-friendly, but have the added interest of a silk border to dress up the look.”
